Hello and welcome to the DailyDrip emacs topic. In this video we're going to introduce you to `org-mode`. `Org-mode` is based on the concept of Getting Things Done (GTD), and it has expanded from there and it is one of the most amazingly powerful note-taking and life-organizing tools I've ever seen. In the next four and a half minutes or so we will take a look at what makes it so powerful, so simple to use, and we'll still be barely scratching the surface. So, we don't have a lot of time, let's get started. The very first thing to do is in fact to modify our `init.el` to improve the display of org-mode. In a future video we'll talk about organizing the config file because it's getting messy very quickly. So we're going to add ```elisp (setq org-startup-indented t) ``` And then we're going to execute it with `C-x C-e` and save (`C-x C-s`). Then we'll create a new file: `C-x C-f /tmp/screencasts.org RET`. We can see that `(Org Ind)` is at the bottom, `Org` is org-mode and `Ind` shows us that our setting was applied. Let's create a header that we'll call Refactor, like so: ``` * Refactor ``` Let's create another header with `M-` and you'll notice there is another star on the new line, so it's easy to add text, and then use `M-` again: ``` * Refactor * Write a test * Make it pass ``` But wait, that's not the order for TDD right?, No biggie, we can use `M-` and `M-` to move them around and reorder them. Sweet! ``` * Write a test * Make it pass * Refactor ``` If we wanted to move this underneath a header, we could easily do so with `M-` ... Or `M-` to un-indent. ``` * TDD * Write a test * Make it pass * Refactor ``` We can even write things underneath these headers: ``` * TDD * Write a test This is the hard part. * Make it pass * Refactor ``` Now if we move the cursor down to the line with `Refactor` and press `M-` from here we'll have a new header indented the same way as `Refactor`! That's great, but for now we want to unindent with `M-` and type another top-level header: ``` * TDD * Write a test This is the hard part. * Make it pass * Refactor * Get story * Check with the product owner ``` Well that's not the right order, so let's see if we can fix it, let's move the point to "Get story" and move it up with `M-`. ``` * Get story * TDD * Write a test This is the hard part. * Make it pass * Refactor * Check with the product owner ``` Look at that, it moved everything under `TDD`. I mean, *obviously* that's the right behavior, but it's really cool that it did it so painlessly, isn't it? Okay, let's move the next one with `M-` or `M-`, wherever your point is. And we can of course just add more text underneath, easily enough. ``` * Get story * Check with the product owner Or get lunch or something. * TDD * Write a test This is the hard part. * Make it pass * Refactor ``` If that was all we could do, that would be neat, but there's more. Let's talk about lists. We can use a `-` to start a list, and like with headers, we can use `M-`, `M-`, `M-`, `M-` and `M-` ``` - Foo - Bar - Baz ``` We can do something even cooler though. Let's look at checklists. You begin with `- [ ] foo`. Here we do the same thing as with headers and lists, but we do have to add a key to differentiate: `M-S-`, that is, Meta + Shift + Enter: ``` - [ ] Errands - [ ] Buy apples ``` Of course that's a subtask, so `M-`! ``` - [ ] Errands - [ ] Buy apples - [ ] Buy dishes ``` But we can do something really impressive here. If we add a slash inside the `Errands` top-level checkbox, then press `C-c C-c`, it will realize we want to know how many items are done and how many are total. ``` - [0/2] Errands - [ ] Buy apples - [ ] Buy dishes ``` From there, if we go to the bottom and add another one with `M-S-`, the number will change! ``` - [0/3] Errands - [ ] Buy apples - [ ] Buy dishes - [ ] ``` AWESOME. ``` - [0/3] Errands - [ ] Buy apples - [ ] Buy dishes - [ ] Buy USB key ``` Now to mark them as complete, all we need to do is `C-c C-c` on the line to mark it as completed: ``` - [1/3] Errands - [X] Buy apples - [ ] Buy dishes - [ ] Buy USB key ``` ``` - [2/3] Errands - [X] Buy apples - [X] Buy dishes - [ ] Buy USB key ``` ``` - [3/3] Errands - [X] Buy apples - [X] Buy dishes - [X] Buy USB key ``` Boom.
